How to Survive Finals: A Step-by-Step Guide
It’s finals week for me, and I’m guessing if you’re in school, it’s most likely finals week for you too. Here are some tips on making it through the week.
Step One: Breathe
You got this! Take a deep breath and get your head in a good space. Feel a little better? If not, take another deep breath!
Step Two: Make a List
Write down any papers and take-home exams you have to do and write their due dates next to them. Also write down any in-class finals you have with the date and time. Once you’ve finished (double check to make sure you didn’t forget anything!), put all of these dates into your calendar on your phone and your planner, if you have one.
Step Three: Breathe (again)
Sometimes writing everything out can be overwhelming. Take another deep breath (or two, or three) if you need it.
Step Four: Prioritize
Look over your list and think about which items are going to take the most amount of time, and which ones are due first. You should prioritize these. Make sure you get the stuff that is due first done on time, and also make sure you leave enough time for you to get through the tougher assignments.
Step Five: Set a Schedule
Take a look at your schedule for the week. What times do you have open when you can work on assignments and study? Now, actually set aside those times for finals. Put it in your phone calendar or in your planner, whatever works for you. But have it be a part of your schedule. Whether you just decide to have the whole chunk of time dedicated to finals in general or whether you want to break it up by class/assignment, it doesn’t matter. Just include your exams as part of your schedule so you don’t get sidetracked later.
Step Six: Stick to Your Schedule
This is so hard because we’re all just so done at the end of the semester, but hang in there! You can do it! Keep to the schedule you set, and you’ll thank yourself later.
Step Seven: Do Work
If you’ve stuck to your schedule, this should be pretty easy. Just get it done during those times you’ve already set aside. You’re almost there!
Step Eight: Breathe (again again)
Take a deep breath because you’re so close! Try taking a deep breath before starting each exam to get in the right headspace. You’ve totally got this!
Step Nine: Celebrate!
You did it! Finals week is over and you survived! Congrats, I knew you could do it. Now go home and watch some Netflix, or go out with friends for a drink. You deserve it!
